Samish Island Congregation
We appreciate your request for information about the Community of Christ.
We are a worldwide fellowship of persons working together to serve the communities in which we live. We believe all are called to such service and all have gifts and talents to offer.
World Headquarters, including a Temple dedicated to the pursuit of peace, is in Independence, Missouri. There are 250,000 members in 1,500+ congregations in more than 50 countries.
You are cordially invited to become a participant in any of these congregations.
What we offer
We are a Christian church with a unique mission. We believe we are called to present to the world:
- A loving community of Christian disciples dedicated to service
- Scriptures that benefit our lives today
- Doctrines based on the teachings of Jesus Christ
- Forms of organization that follow patterns of the New Testament church
- Specific goals, such as developing Christian homes and communities in which to live joyful and productive lives
Beliefs
Here are examples of distinctive beliefs that are familiar to most Christians but receive special emphasis in our church:
- We believe God's Spirit is available to guide us today, both as individuals in our daily lives and as a church through prophetic leadership and an open canon of scripture.
- We believe in a priesthood that is called of God by revelation through an administrative structure in which the man or woman accepts specific responsibilities of service. The offices of priesthood are found in the scriptures. Examples: prophet, apostle, high priest, evangelist, bishop, seventy, elder, priest, teacher, deacon.
- We believe in stewardship, which means we accept God as creator of our universe and everything in it. We are stewards over creation, including our own bodies and minds, the earth on which we live, and the blessings we receive. We feel we are accountable to God for our stewardship response to the opportunities placed before us to grow and develop.
Scriptures
We have three books of scripture:
- The Holy Scriptures, which includes the Old Testament and the New Testament.
- The Book of Mormon, an additional revelation of how God ministers to people through the Lord Jesus Christ.
- The Doctrine and Covenants, a record of guidance to the church through modern prophets.
